ROGER WOODHEAD HONORED BY AMERICAN
CONCRETE INSTITUTE
Paper written about difficulties proves constructive
Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA
Dr. Roger Woodhead, a 30-year international engineering design and construction professional, was presented with the annual Construction Award by the American Concrete Institute (ACI) for his paper titled "Experiences with the Caisson Sinking Method". The ceremony took place on April 22, 2007 in Atlanta, Georgia at the Atlanta Hilton.
The ACI Construction Award is given to authors of papers for outstanding merit in concrete construction. Dr. Woodhead who co-authored the paper with Kevin Main, details the difficulties and lessons learned when building underground concrete structures in high water table areas. This paper provides valuable insight and guidance to engineers planning on using this method of construction.
Dr. Woodhead has 30 years of experience as a professional engineer and lead quality auditor on construction projects spanning the globe. He has also taught construction management, project management, motivation and leadership at various universities and educational institutions throughout his career.
Dr. Woodhead is currently the technical director with SNC-Lavalin Inc. for the design/build component of the Canada Line Rapid Transit Project in Vancouver, British Columbia. Dr. Woodhead is responsible for overseeing engineering and quality management for this $1.9 billion public-private partnership. The Canada Line is currently the largest public infrastructure project in Canada and is scheduled for completion in November 2009.

Director of Planning Brings Vancouver Vision To Members of Construction Industry
Directors, members and guests of the British Columbia Construction Roundtable welcomed Brent Toderian, Director of Planning for the City of Vancouver, as the keynote speaker at their twelth Annual General Meeting. Mr. Toderian gave a presentation on his vision for the next stages of development of Vancouver.

Four years ago, the BC Construction Roundtable Board of Directors established a student bursary for studies in engineering and construction management. The recipients of this year’s $2000 awards were Roman Goldmann, who is completing a Bachelor of Technology in Construction Management at BCIT, and Madhav Nepal, who is completing a PhD in Construction Engineering and Management at UBC.

VCRC’s Outstanding Woman in Construction
Marina Pratchett is the honoured recipient of the VRCA’s 2006 Outstanding Woman in Construction Award.
Marina is a partner at Fasken Martineau DuMoulin currently practicing in the area of construction and engineering law. She acts for major public and private owners, developers, large contractors and construction managers in respect to various types of projects including institutional, commercial, industrial, high-rise residential and infrastructure projects.
She received her BA through the University of Toronto, and went on to earn her LL.B at UBC followed by her LL.M at the Osgood Hall Law School of York University. In 2000, she was appointed Queen’s Counsel, a designation reserved to recognize elite members of the legal community.
For the past 3 years, she has been Vice President of the Canadian Construction Women Association; acting as a mentor to many women in the industry. She was the first and currently only woman to have ever held the position of Chair of the Vancouver Regional Construction Association and the BC Construction Roundtable. She continues to sit as a Director of the BC Construction Roundtable. She also sits as Chair of the Fasken Martineau DuMoulin Women’s Lawyer Group. In this position, she founded the Executive Women’s Forum in which women from across the country share their views and experiences with women in the Vancouver business society.
This year’s winner is also active within the community. As Director and Vice President of ProBono Law of British Columbia, she is able to assist and support those who may otherwise not have had access to legal advice. She also serves as an Honorary Board Member for the Big Sisters of British Columbia, is a member of the Community Outreach Program and has been re-elected as Director on the Board of Governors of the Vancouver Community College.
